Before Koei's Dynasty Warriors games received a Japanese repaint, and was spun-off as Samurai Warriors, another games developer named Capcom had an attempt at a game adaptation of the Warring States Period of Japan!
Actually attempt is not the right word seen as even though no-one knows of Capcom's Sengoku Basara in the Western world, it still exists in Japan! In the US the first Sengoku Basara was renamed Devil Kings, and all Japanese references were removed by Capcom themselves, thinking that it would be better for the Americans!
As mentioned both are set in Japan's Warring States Period, and feature the same characters, but then that's where they differ -well there might be other similarities, but I don't know!
The character designs and the way some of the characters interact with other characters is different in Sengoku Basara (Devil Kings) to that of Sengoku Musou (Samurai Warriors)! The koeiwarriors website has pictures of the differences between (some of) the two's character designs here!
To be honest I don't really know why I'm making this thread seen as there probably isn't really anyone who would be able to throw up their own comparisions, however I though I'd just post it anyway ;D!

- In Sengoku Basara the main characters/rivals appear to be Yukimura Sanada and Masamune Date, Yukimura is also a headstrong "kid", whereas Masamune is older, and a litte more cautious! This is quite different to Sengoku Musou, Yukimura and Masamune are far from being rivals, well actually Masamune is almost like everyone's rival, crashing the party if the chance arrives, in this he's the headstrong "kid", whereas Yukimura is the older, and (only slightly) a little more cautious!
- Characters such as Oichi, Mitsuhide Akechi and Uesugi Kenshin differ between Basara and Musou! In Musou, Oichi is a sunny girl armed with a kendama, whereas in Basara she's a woman consumed by darkness, and armed with a double bladed naginata! In Musou, Mitsuhide is a man of honour and justice, wielding a sword, whereas in Basara he's a sadistic psychopath, wielding two scythes -in the game he is also one of two characters that can attack their own army! In Musou, Kenshin has an imposing stature to him, which leaves no wonder in your mind why he is the God of War, whereas in Basara he looks like a fairy of some description -I was surprised they actually gave him (an almost) masculine voice!
- They also have different characters, in Musou Yukimura is teamed up with an kunoichi, called well Kunoichi (this is because Kunoichi isn't technically based on a historical figure), and in Basara Kenshin has a kunoichi (also not based on a historical figure) called Kasuga! Basara also features other characters that Musou doesn't (such as Itsuki and Matsu), and vice versa!
- Other differences between Basara and Musou is that for some reason in Basara Masamune Date has opted to kit out his horse, by giving it handlebars and an exhaust, that they have familiars (well the ninja anyway), and that they go super saiyan, something which Koei didn't do till Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce !
- Found out that Mamiko Noto provides the voice for Oichi, and found that the voice she uses in Basara is different to the normal voice you hear her using for the various characters you play! Still the fact she hadly featured in the first episode means I wasn't able to get that much of a listen to her different voice!
To be honest I don't really know why I'm making this thread seen as there probably isn't really anyone who would be able to throw up their own comparisions, however I though I'd just post it anyway ;D!
